In the mood to learn about one of the first things we do for new local SEO clients? Google Places is the most important place for any business to get listed properly.
The following training is from Google staffers themselves and outlines everything you need to know about getting set up and running on Google Places. (You'll see why a lot of businesses choose to hire pros like us to do this and other search engine optimization work for them.)

Wondering where your business is showing up on local search directories?
It's a good practice to check on your listings regularly for a couple of reasons. One, new sites are added which offer free listings. Two, you need to keep up on your current listings to make sure your NAP (Name, Address, Phone) and other content and keywords are up to date.
Some local directories add new perks to their listings from time to time. If you haven't gone back to your Google Places (Now Google+ Local) to upload photos or a video, you should definitely do that.
Yelp and others continually add to their local business listings services and they usually include things that will help you get more traffic and more notice from your target customers.
One of the tools we use to get a 30,000 foot view of new client listings saturation is GetListed.org.
Simply type in your business name and zip code, and Get Listed finds everything it can on your business on the biggest and most important local directories, places, and review services.
The report that's returned will give you a basic overview of how you're doing in local search listings.
Don't worry if Get Listed doesn't return a listing that you know you have. If you've done your Google Places listing and it doesn't show as claimed on your Get Listed report, this only means they didn't pick it up on this particular search.
It can also mean that you listed your business with a slightly different name, and Get Listed didn't pick it up. For example, on Google Places you listed your business name with "Inc." or "LLC" in the name. This throws off the search at Get Listed.
This is why it is very important that your NAP information is exactly the same on every site you list with. Google and other engines rely on exact business name, address, and phone number, for instance.
